• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

Was Venonat supposed to evolve into Butterfree?

Well, except for If by "supposed to be switched" you mean "were switched purposely because they wanted it that way but used to be the other way around", then maybe yes.

Was Venonat supposed to evolve into Butterfree?

They don't become bumblebees with drills for hands either. :p I think the key to figuring this out is figuring out if the art or the sprites were done first. The Sugimori art definitely doesn't lend itself to this theory as much as the sprites do... Not many evolutions back then looked so much...

Was Venonat supposed to evolve into Butterfree?

Oh, the anime art. I think it's properly called cel-shaded. Yes, that for sure came later than the images I posted. Those were in the actual booklets that came with the Red and Blue games- I still have mine for Red. I didn't see any art like yours until I got the "Pokemon Handbook" (I posted it...

Was Venonat supposed to evolve into Butterfree?

Was Venonat supposed to evolve into Butterfree?

Hm... An interesting thought, but personally I doubt it. The similarity only exists if you describe it vaguely... "Round mouth, two teeth, segmented eyes". Their Sugimori art (I've always assumed they were done first, before the sprites, but I'm not sure) looks quite different... Butterfree's...
